Spotted
The Spectacled Parrotbill (Conspicillata group) is a distinctive parrotbill species found in the eastern Himalayas and northern Southeast Asia. It is named for the prominent dark 'spectacles' around its eyes.
Where to spot
Found in the eastern Himalayas (northeast India, Bhutan, northern Myanmar) and northern parts of Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Inhabits dense broadleaf evergreen forests, bamboo, and thickets at mid-elevations.
How to spot
Look for its clear dark eye-ring and generally dull brownish plumage with a stout pale bill. Often found in small, active flocks, moving through dense vegetation. Listen for its high-pitched, often metallic calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day. More easily located by its calls during the breeding season (spring-summer).
Its bold eye-ring and rather plain body plumage help it blend into the dense bamboo and undergrowth it favors.
