Spotted
The Rukia White-eye is a critically endangered and highly localized species endemic to the island of Chuuk in Micronesia. It is a shy bird of montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Tol (part of Chuuk) in the Federated States of Micronesia. Critically endangered, found in remaining high-altitude montane forests.
How to spot
Its plain brownish-grey plumage and faint eye-ring make it inconspicuous. It is very shy and often stays hidden in dense foliage. Listen for its high-pitched, soft calls to locate it.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the day. Observing it requires significant effort due to its rarity and limited habitat.
This species is named after the island it inhabits, and its severe population decline is a major conservation concern.
