Spotted
A small, shy antwren named for its rufous tail, the Rufous-tailed Antwren frequents the dense undergrowth of humid lowland rainforests. Its subtle coloration makes it blend well with its environment.
Where to spot
Western Amazon Basin, found in southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil.
How to spot
Look carefully in the dense understory and vine tangles of primary and mature secondary forests. Listen for its soft, often barely audible calls, as it can be very difficult to spot visually.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Observation is best during the cooler parts of the day, like early morning.
This species is known for its quiet, deliberate movements as it gleans insects from the undersides of leaves and branches in the lower forest strata, often remaining unnoticed.
