Critically endangered and restricted to a tiny area of humid Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Requires extreme patience and specialized guidance in its very limited, protected habitat. Listen for its distinctive vocalizations, as visual encounters are incredibly rare and require luck.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but exceptionally difficult to find. Best sought in early morning.
This extremely rare species was rediscovered in 1991 after fears it was extinct, highlighting the immense conservation challenges in the highly fragmented Atlantic Forest and the dedication of researchers.
