Spotted
The Plain Illadopsis is a rather drab and unstreaked babbler of African forests, known for its secretive behavior and subtle vocalizations. It is a master of camouflage in the dense undergrowth.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, including countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi. It inhabits lowland and montane rainforests, preferring dense undergrowth and thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, often repeated, whistled calls. Look for a plain brownish bird moving quietly and quickly through dense low vegetation, typically alone or in pairs. Patience is key.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often foraging quietly.
Its 'plain' plumage allows it to blend almost seamlessly into the dappled light and shadows of the forest floor, making it very difficult to spot.
