The Peruvian Antshrike is a rare and highly localized species, endemic to a very specific region of southeastern Peru. It is a secretive bird of the forest understory.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth of humid lowland and foothill rainforests, particularly in bamboo thickets, endemic to a restricted range in southeastern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'tew-tew-tew-tew' call. Observe from a distance with extreme patience, focusing on subtle movements in the thick vegetation. A local guide is highly recommended.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Its calls are the best way to locate this elusive bird.
This species was only recently described to science, highlighting the ongoing discovery of new bird species even in well-studied regions.
