Spotted
The Olive-backed Sparrow, also known as the Rufous-winged Sparrow, is a small, relatively plain sparrow found in Mexico and Central America. It has an olive-grey back and a rufous crown.
Where to spot
Found from northeastern Mexico south through Central America to Costa Rica. Inhabits humid evergreen forests, forest edges, and dense second growth.
How to spot
Look for it foraging in dense undergrowth, often on the ground. Its relatively plain plumage and olive tones can make it blend in. Listen for its short, buzzy song.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, which varies by region but often aligns with the local rainy season.
This species is often found in the dense undergrowth of humid forests, making it more challenging to observe than other open-habitat sparrows.
