Humid lowland and foothill forests, especially in the Atlantic Forest region of southeastern Brazil. Prefers dense understory and forest edges.

Its rufous throat and breast are key identification features. Listen for its loud, often rapid chattering calls. Seek out its large stick nest in dense thickets.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours, with increased vocalization and nesting activity during the austral spring and summer.
This species has a particularly elaborate nest structure, often incorporating multiple chambers and entrances, possibly as a defense against predators.
