Spotted
The Mountain Warbler is a small, agile warbler found in the highlands of East Africa. It is a shy species, often hidden within dense undergrowth of montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of East Africa, primarily found in highlands of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi, preferring forest undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Focus on the dense understory of montane forests. Look for subtle movements and listen for its distinct song, which is often a key identifier distinguishing it from similar species.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the early morning when males are most vocal, helping to pinpoint their location in dense habitat.
Despite its common name, the Mountain Warbler is a relatively recent split from the Yellow-throated Warbler (Iduna natalensis) based on genetic and vocal differences.
