Spotted
The Large-billed Antshrike is a robust antshrike distinguished by its disproportionately large, hooked bill. It inhabits the dense understory of humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth, particularly bamboo, in humid montane forests, across parts of the Andes (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru).
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear whistle or hooting calls. Observe patiently from a distance, focusing on areas with thick bamboo or vine tangles. Watch for signs of its foraging activity in dead wood.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal in the early morning. It can be found foraging throughout the day in its dense habitat.
Its massive bill is specially adapted for tearing apart rotten wood and bromeliads to extract large insects and other invertebrates.
