A medium-sized sunbird, Hartlaub's Sunbird has glossy dark upperparts, a dark grey throat, and a bright yellow belly, often with an orange wash. It has a long, curved bill.
Where to spot
Endemic to São Tomé Island, Gulf of Guinea, inhabiting montane and lowland forests, including disturbed areas.
How to spot
Look for it in the canopy and mid-story of forests, often visiting flowering trees. Its yellow belly and dark upperparts are useful identifiers. Listen for its varied calls.
When to spot
Active year-round, especially in the mornings and late afternoons when foraging.
Hartlaub's Sunbird is endemic to the island of São Tomé, part of an archipelago in the Gulf of Guinea with a high degree of species endemism, making it a unique island resident.
