Where to spot
Widespread across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Found in almost any aquatic habitat, from ponds and rivers to coastal estuaries, lakes, and even urban parks.
How to spot
Identify by its large size, predominantly grey plumage, and long S-curved neck. Look for it standing motionless at the water's edge, or flying with slow, deep wingbeats and its neck pulled back into an S-shape.
When to spot
Year-round resident in many areas, with some northern populations migrating south for winter. Active during daylight hours, often seen patiently fishing.
