Widespread in arid and semi-arid grasslands, open scrub, and dry savannas across Southern Africa.
How to spot
Scan open, often sparse, ground. Males are readily identifiable. Look for their low, undulating flight or listen for their simple, often buzzing calls.
When to spot
Observable year-round. More vocal and conspicuous during the breeding season (spring/summer).
Males have a striking black belly and face pattern, contrasting with their pale grey upperparts, making them quite conspicuous when perched.
