Spotted
The Brown Pitohui is a medium-sized, drab-colored songbird found across New Guinea and some surrounding islands. Its unassuming plumage allows it to blend into the dense forest understory.
Where to spot
Widespread in lowland and hill forests across New Guinea and its associated islands. Inhabits primary and secondary growth.
How to spot
Look for its overall plain brown plumage, which can be subtly varied. Listen for its characteristic loud, somewhat monotonous whistling calls, often the best way to detect this secretive bird.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early mornings and late afternoons, foraging for insects and fruits.
While less colorful than some pitohui relatives, it still shares the family trait of possessing toxins in its skin and feathers, though typically in lower concentrations.
