The Blue Cochoa is arguably the most spectacular of the cochoas, adorned with brilliant azure blue plumage contrasting with black. It is a rare inhabitant of high-altitude forests in Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Dense, humid montane evergreen forests, often near streams, on the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo.
How to spot
Requires great patience due to its rarity and secretive nature. Look high in the canopy or mid-story, especially near fruiting trees or damp areas. Listen for its distinctive, often melancholic, calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the breeding season (spring) when males are more vocal. Dawn and dusk are prime observation times.

Its intensely vibrant blue color comes from structural coloration in its feathers, which scatters light to produce the striking hue.
