The Blue Chaffinch is a striking finch species endemic to the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Males are distinctively slate-blue, a unique coloration among chaffinches, adapted to its specific pine forest habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Canary Island Pine forests (Pinus canariensis) of Tenerife, particularly in the Teide National Park and Anaga Rural Park. A small, separate population exists on Gran Canaria (the Gran Canaria Blue Chaffinch, now often considered a separate species).
How to spot
Focus on mature Canary Island Pine forests. Look for its distinctive blue plumage (males) or duller, brownish-blue (females). Listen for its unique, somewhat simpler song compared to the Common Chaffinch, often delivered from high in the pines.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Best observed during the breeding season (spring and early summer) when males are more vocal and conspicuous in their display flights.
