Barred Owl-Warbler

-
Not yet spotted on Fladder
Spotted
A small, plump warbler with prominent barring on its underparts, a plain brown back, and a relatively short tail often held cocked.
Where to spot
Dry woodlands, particularly miombo and acacia woodlands, and dense scrub in Southern Africa.
How to spot
Look for the clear barring on its breast and belly and its wren-like posture. It can be elusive in dense cover. Listen for its distinctive, often high-pitched, buzzing or churring song.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the mornings. Breeding usually occurs during the austral spring/summer.
The 'owl-warbler' part of its name might refer to its rather plump, compact body shape or perhaps its often cryptic nature in dense cover.
