Spotted
The Australian Varied Thrush is a striking thrush found in eastern Australia, characterized by its beautifully scaled plumage and a distinct crescent-shaped mark on its breast.
Where to spot
Wet sclerophyll forests, rainforests, and dense woodlands along the east coast of Australia, from Queensland to Victoria.
How to spot
Look on the forest floor, often near fallen logs or dense undergrowth. Move slowly and quietly. Listen for its distinctive, often mournful, whistling call.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during early morning and late afternoon. Can be more visible after rain when worms are plentiful.
Its intricate scaling provides superb camouflage among the leaf litter, allowing it to remain hidden even when actively foraging on the forest floor.
