De Scharlaken Gaffelvliegenvanger (Pyrocephalus rubinus) is een kleine, opvallende tiran, waarvan de mannetjes bekend staan om hun helderrode verenkleed. De vrouwtjes zijn veel valer van kleur.
Waar te spotten
Wijdverspreid in open gebieden met verspreide bomen, struikgewassen langs waterlopen, en open bossen van het zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten tot het centrale deel van Zuid-Amerika.
Hoe te spotten
Zoek naar het mannetje op een open, prominente uitkijkpost, zoals een lage tak of een hekpaal. Let op zijn vurige rode kleur. Vrouwtjes zijn onopvallender bruin met een roze-oranje tint op de buik.
Wanneer te spotten
Het hele jaar door in zijn residentiële gebieden. Trekkende populaties zijn het best te observeren tijdens de lente- en najaarstrek. Actief gedurende de dag.

Het mannetje is onmiskenbaar met zijn scharlakenrode kroon, borst en buik, wat een spectaculair contrast vormt met zijn donkere rug. Hij is een geliefd onderwerp voor vogelaars.
