Spotted
The Yellow-rumped Seedeater is a small, streaky finch named for its yellowish rump, which is particularly visible in flight. Males have a brighter yellow wash on the underparts.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, particularly Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. It inhabits grasslands, open woodlands, and cultivation, often near human settlements.
How to spot
Look for them foraging on the ground in open areas or perched on low wires/bushes. The yellow rump is the best field mark. Listen for their simple calls.
When to spot
Visible year-round in its resident range. Best observed during the breeding season when males are more vocal. Flocking in dry season.
This species often forms mixed-species flocks with other seedeaters and canaries outside the breeding season.
