Spotted
The Short-billed Bulbul is a less conspicuous bulbul, characterized by its relatively short bill compared to other species, and a generally dull, olive-brown plumage. It is a forest-dwelling bird, often heard more than seen.
Where to spot
Found in dense forest habitats on various islands in Indonesia and the Philippines, typically in lowland and montane forests.
How to spot
Focus on the mid-story and undergrowth of dense forests. Its subdued coloration provides excellent camouflage, so look for subtle movements and listen for its calls.
When to spot
Year-round, as it is a resident species within its specific island ranges.
Despite its name, the 'short-bill' is perfectly adapted for its diet, allowing it to efficiently consume both insects and small berries from the forest undergrowth.
