Spotted
Schlegel's Bush Chat is a small, pale chat species of arid regions, named after the German ornithologist Hermann Schlegel. It is generally plain grey-brown with paler underparts.
Where to spot
Found in arid regions of Southern Africa, including Namibia and South Africa, inhabiting desert, semi-desert, and sparse scrubland, often on stony plains.
How to spot
Look for it on open, stony ground with scattered sparse vegetation. It often stays low, making it camouflaged. Listening for its soft, chat-like calls can aid in detection.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late afternoon.
This species is well-adapted to extremely arid environments, often found in areas with minimal vegetation and harsh climatic conditions.
