Spotted
The Puna Pewee is a stocky, dull-colored flycatcher adapted to the high-altitude, open habitats of the Andean Puna region. It is notable for its resilience in harsh environments.
Where to spot
Found in the high-altitude Puna and Altiplano zones of the central Andes, in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Look for it perched on low shrubs, rocks, or fence posts in open country. Its simple, often whistled call is important for identification in its vast habitat.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, particularly in the mornings. It is a resident species, observable year-round in its specific high-altitude habitat.
Unlike most forest-dwelling pewees, the Puna Pewee thrives in open, often arid or semi-arid shrublands and grasslands at very high elevations.
