Spotted
The Plain Myzomela is a small, unassuming honeyeater found across New Guinea and some surrounding islands. Its name reflects its largely drab plumage, lacking bright colors.
Where to spot
Widespread in New Guinea (both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea), as well as on the Aru Islands and parts of the Moluccas. It prefers primary and secondary forests from lowlands to lower montane areas.
How to spot
A small, olive-brown bird with a paler belly and a slender, decurved bill. Its plainness is its key identification feature. Look for its active foraging among flowering trees and listen for its high-pitched, thin, reedy calls.
When to spot
Active during the day, feeding on nectar, small insects, and occasional fruits. It is a resident species, observable year-round wherever flowering plants are present.
Despite its 'plain' appearance, this myzomela is an important pollinator, visiting a wide range of native flowers in its forest habitat.
