Spotted
A small, active finch very similar to the Common Redpoll but generally smaller and darker with more streaking. It is often found in woodlands and heathlands, particularly favoring birch and alder.
Where to spot
Primarily found in Europe and parts of Asia, preferring woodlands, hedgerows, parks, and scrubby areas, especially those with birch and alder trees.
How to spot
Look for them foraging in birches and alders, often in mixed flocks with other finches. Pay attention to its smaller size, darker streaking, and slightly warmer brown tones compared to the Common Redpoll.
When to spot
Year-round resident in much of its range; winter flocks can be easier to spot as they forage more widely.

The Lesser Redpoll was once considered a subspecies of the Common Redpoll, but recent genetic studies have provided evidence that it is a distinct species, differing in size, plumage, and vocalizations.
