Spotted
This hybrid duck occurs when the vagrant Eurasian Wigeon (Mareca penelope) interbreeds with the widespread American Wigeon (Mareca americana). Identifying this cross can be challenging due to the close relationship and similar appearance of the parent species.
Where to spot
Primarily North America, especially along coastlines or large inland water bodies where Eurasian Wigeons are occasional visitors and mix with native American Wigeons.
How to spot
Look for a wigeon showing an intermediate head pattern, possibly a less distinct buff crown than a pure Eurasian or a more pronounced grey head than a pure American. Plumage may be a mix of the richer rufous tones of Eurasian and grey-brown of American.
When to spot
During winter and early spring, when Eurasian Wigeons are most likely to be present in North America, overlapping with American Wigeon populations.
Both Eurasian and American Wigeons are known for their distinctive whistling calls, which hybrids may also emit, sometimes with mixed qualities.
