Spotted
The Elegant Chlorophonia is a small, vibrant finch found in humid montane forests of Central America. Males are particularly stunning with iridescent green backs, bright yellow underparts, and a distinct blue cap.
Where to spot
Found in montane evergreen forests from southern Mexico south through Central America to western Panama. It typically inhabits the canopy and mid-story of humid forests.
How to spot
Look for this colorful bird high in the forest canopy, often foraging for berries. Its bright plumage can be hard to spot amidst foliage. Listen for its soft, whistled calls, which often reveal its presence before it is seen.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Best observed during the fruiting seasons of its preferred trees, typically during the dry season or early wet season, when food is abundant.
These birds are primarily frugivores, playing an important role in seed dispersal for various fruit-bearing trees and shrubs in their forest habitats.
