Spotted
A small, energetic finch often found in flocks, easily distinguished by its small red forehead patch and streaky plumage. It is well-adapted to cold climates and feeds primarily on small seeds.
Where to spot
Circumpolar, breeding in northern taiga and tundra across North America, Europe, and Asia; winters further south into boreal and temperate zones.
How to spot
Look for them in birch, alder, and willow thickets, often hanging upside down to extract seeds from catkins. Listen for their distinctive 'chick-chick-chick' calls and a rattling 'drrrr' note in flight.
When to spot
Most commonly observed in winter when they move to lower latitudes and are more visible at garden feeders or in deciduous woodlands.

Redpolls have specialized expandable pouches in their throat that allow them to store seeds, enabling them to collect food quickly and cache it for later consumption in harsh, cold environments.
