Spotted
The Mouse-coloured Flycatcher (*Agricola pallidus*, now *Melaenornis pallidus*) is a widespread African flycatcher. It is a plain, pale greyish-brown bird, sometimes with a faint warm wash on the flanks, and a rather inconspicuous appearance.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting a variety of open dry woodlands, savannas, and acacia scrub. Often found near forest edges or clearings.
How to spot
Look for its plain, dull greyish-brown plumage and upright posture. Watch for its characteristic flycatching behavior from an exposed perch. Listen for its quiet, unassuming calls.
When to spot
Resident throughout much of its range, active year-round. It is often observed throughout the day, sallying from prominent perches to catch insects.
Its name aptly describes its unassuming, mouse-like coloration, which helps it blend in with the dry vegetation of its habitat.
